[DeTomaso] Rust in Tank

FWIW,. I have long used hardware store concrete etch for cleaning inside steel fuel tanks. Ideally, the tank is out of the car so it can be 'sloshed' or shaken while about 20% full of a weak acid. In my choice, it's a dilute phosphoric acid solution used to clean and prep concrete. It's advantage is, the residue left after an overnight stay in the tank and a thorough rinse is an insoluble white coating of iron phosphate. I also use this on really bad tanks that need welding repairs.
Most if not all of the other weak acid residues are water soluble, so they go away from contact with further atmospheric moisture. This leaves the now unprotected steel even more vulnerable to rust.  Another factor is, most humans are not sensitive to the weak acids, but no guarantees: somewhere, there is someone that's allergic to ANYTHING. So be reasonably careful not to get any on you or your clothes.

Yep, I know about all that.
I was mostly just letting everyone know that unless you've taken care
of it, you probably have a lot of rust in your tank too.
I was surprised by how much, though.

Fill the tank with water and 20% citric acid. Heat it with an

hours. All rust and debris will be gone. After flush it well with
water, let it dry and you are done.
