[DeTomaso] Correct amount of oil for an Armondo 10 qt pan.

I measured the dipstick, and it is 38" from cup to tip, but I noticed it had been altered at the top, just after the cup. It had been cut and riveted together again. I don't know if it was shortened or lengthened to get it to the 38" but after I added two more quarts (total of 8) the level was exactly at the line that was etched into the dipstick. The etched line was added, probably by me, and is above the normal fill line printed on the dipstick, but I'm guessing all this was figured out when the engine was rebuilt and the new pan was added--15 years ago!
After than much time I can't recall all the details, so I'll just have to have faith it will all work out. After all, it operated that way since then with no problems, traveling to two Fun Rallys in Arizona (3000 miles each), one in San Diego (2400 miles), one in Reno (1400 miles) and many other trips I can't even remember.
I promised Mike Thomas that if nothing goes wacky with the car in the next couple of months I will change her name from Pandora to a more positive title. Maybe something like "Bathsheba!" 😅
Sincerely,
Chris

Mike,
You are exactly right. The ONLY thing that dictates how much oil goes into the pan is the distance between the top of the oil and the bottom of the rotating assembly. That distance is fixed by the dipstick. You could hang a pan the size of Lake Michigan under the engine and the oil quantity would still be determined by the stock dipstick.
(This presumes that the dipstick is actually correct which is by no means a given. The TSB shows what the proper length should be—38 inches from cup to tip. On Lori’s 1971 the dipstick was too short which meant there was too much oil in the engine. Rather than lengthening the dipstick, instead we cut the appropriate amount from the back of the tube which had the same effect.)
The aftermarket “10-quart” pans are not quite that generous. Most people find they require 8.5-9 quarts including a bone dry filter. If you pre-fill the filter it will easily hold a half quart which would then reduce the amount you need to pour into the engine…..
