[DeTomaso] Correct amount of oil for an Armondo 10 qt pan.

When this was discussed several years ago, someone wrote to Armando. They said something like, with the pan off the engine, add oil until it's at the bottom of the windage tray. This is your new full line. I don't recall the exact steps, so someone should find it in the archives. I did this with mine, and it was about 8 quarts. After I put the pan back on the engine, I added the same amount of oil, and it was right at the full line on the dipstick.

The ideal amount is just enough. If you add too much, it causes windage. I saw the same Engine Masters that Jack saw. They saw pretty large gains by using an expensive pan with large kickouts. It really surprised me. Of course, I knew it helped, but I didn't realize how much. Point being there are measurable gains by avoiding windage.

There's an excellent book on FE intake manifold comparisons. FEs have a sheet metal piece that fits under the rocker stands in the heads to help direct oil flow. There's an early version with longer fingers, and a later version. Jay, the author, wanted to see how they impacted oil drainback. He plumbed a clear site tube into an old oil pan so that he could watch the oil level in the pan at different RPMs, and of course with different configurations. It was interesting how much the oil dips under RPM.

Thanks again for all the info. Since it's probably better to run a
little low on oil than overfull, I'll probably put in a total of 8
       quarts and call it good.

The wedding reception food was great, by the way--Texas barbecue pork
       and beef!

       Sincerely,

       Chris,
       Yours is an excellent question.
*IF* the pan was a 10-quart pan then your strategy would be sound.
However empirical testing has revealed that they are more like 8.5-9
quarts. Why they are called 10-quart pans is anybody's guess.
       Enjoy the wedding!
