Jeff,

I doubt the joystick design would allow for any beneficial shortening. It consists of a small plastic ball with a short shaft sticking out of it, picture a small plastic tootsie roll pop. 

The knob that is moved for mirror adjustment is a tight press fit onto that short shaft.

Both pieces seem to be ideal candidates for a 3-D printer???

I would be happy to provide one to scan and copy if anyone is willing to take on that project……
