[DeTomaso] Best option for always-on hazard switch

There are two designs of e-switches used on OEM '71-'74 Panteras. One type uses a sheet steel cage to hold the switch body together. Its tabs are easily bent to access the insides for a repair. The other (later?) type uses a series of integral plastic hooks to hold the switch body together. It apparently takes a special tool to simultaneously depress all 6 or so of the plastic hooks for disassembly. I once cut all the hooks away to get inside one of those switches, and found the electrical contacts are different as well. Of course, cutting the plastic hooks off ruins the switch. As usual, all this info is in an old POCA Newsletter article available in the POCA Archives.
All the Pantera vendors sell an OEM switch quite reasonably but as was said, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, BMW and probably other Euros of the day sell a very similar switch. Only the molded wiring numbers on the backside of the switch body vary. The ring nut, bulb and short wiring loom all interchange as well, on most if not all the switches. Blocking the button inside the switch with a toothpick used to be a common "quick-fix" but can buy you a fair bit of trouble. Since pushing the button in a little too far disconnects the brake lights. If a cop sees you driving in that condition, you are awarded a fix-it-ticket for your ingenuity. Do not ask how I know this....J DeRyke

I opened the switch up and bent the pieces back into shape when this happened to my switch. There is a metal wire hook that is supposed to latch to a plastic piece if I recall, and it was fairly obvious what the problem was and it was an easy fix.
