All, are back from Daytona -- all rigs and cars safe. Thought I would send
a quick summary of our weekend:
1. As you all know, after three successful weekends with the Pantera, it
took a XXXX early in the Daytona week. Essentially, after about 1 session
and two laps on the oval, our engine lost its bottom end. We have the
proper Cleveland (1970 spec Ford Trans Am build) wiht the proper exhaust
ready to go in. The car was really well received, so we are willing now to
put a rowdier, more rev-happy, engine in that actually fits and makes
noise. We are considering where to go with a build for the spare. We will
keep you posted.
2. After five attempts at a Daytona 24-hour, we finished this event --
taking both the green and checkered flag. I have finished a 3-hour and
6-hour race previously in Rolex, but never the 24. We forgot how brutal
the nighttime is. We got rained on -- again (2.5 inches in 1 hour) and
lost our canopy in the "tornado warning."
3. The Panoz ran flawlessly. We finished 2nd in class and 9th overall in
our group but had issues unrelated to "mechanical" issues. A Porsche in
front of me blew a left rear at start-finish, and I ran over some carbon
fiber, causing my right front to blow 3 laps later into NASCAR 2. I limped
it in to the pits, with no discernable damage, and continued after losing a
few laps.
4. We also blew out the splitter. Our top speed was 194 mph, and our
splitter lost some rivets, fell apart, and I drove over it. Again, we
limped it in, and I lost a lap. We banged out the bent splitter mounts and
continued.
5. At the very end of the race, our splitter mounts (which we had bent
back when I lost it) gave up, and the splitter dragged for the last few
laps. So, we lost another few laps.
6. The handling for the Panoz was unbelievable -- we ran as high as top
5, set the 7th fasted lap, but due to our problems, took the finish 9th
overall. We had no chance to catch first in class -- way faster (a Ford GT
Rolex car).
7. Our fast lap was 1:57.2, and a top speed of 94 mph. If the splitter
held together, we would have finished only 1 spot higher overall and the
same place in class. So, in the end, we were grateful that losing a tire
and running over the splitter didn't put us in the wall. It turns out
that, as usual, in an endurance race, you typically end up where you
belong.
8. We were the only Panoz there.
9. We have only a few real changes for the Panoz -- better hardware and
mounting for the splitter, move the rear brakes to the back and put bigger
brakes up front. Maybe add some better data acquisition.
10. Here is one of the pics of the 2006 Panoz leading 2010 or later
Porsche Cup cars:

11. I have some incar video from the Pantera and Panoz that I am trying
to edit down to reasonable and will post a link.
The Pantera is an awesome car, the has lots of attention from the Fans. We
were invited to bring the car to some of the important vintage events -- so
that was encouraging.
Thanks, all -- for taking an interest. Regards,
Steven G. Lisa, Esq.
