[DeTomaso] engine mounts, engine moved forward or rearward?

Note- all of these mods are for later 2-point ZF mouns. I don't think the early single-point ZF mount can be so easily modified. If you want to shift the whole powertrain backwards just a little, you can redrill the lower motor mounts towards the back. Doing this up to about 1-1/4" will not require modifying anything else including the exhaust. You will have to adjust the shifter down on its support near the left motor mount, and on some cars, the upper bay brace bar gets close to the external slave cylinder bracket. Our late '72 L mounts were drilled with two different patterns so its mounts were not specfic side to side like earlier ones.

For both of these mods, you must bend the ZF rear frame tabs backward into shallow S shapes and remove all the rearmost transaxle shims. This may reslant the carb so pay attention to your float heights. You'll be shocked at how easily those frame tabs bend. Water pump pliers and a small hammer are all you need. 3/4" is enough to allow big cap distributors to easily clear a stock firewall. To accommodate big-block engines, Bob Byars used to slide the powertrain about 4" backwards, which caused the ZF to touch the A/C shroud & need a dent. That much movement caused lots of other little clearance mods & required new motor mounts. There are over a dozen such Panteras- Forest Goodheart has one.

Subject: [DeTomaso] engine mounts, engine moved forward or rearward?

I know this has been asked before, but is the mount location support to
move the motor forward or rearward?
  Thanks,
  Ken
