In a previous work assignment I had developed several kits for engines in coordination with Time Fasteners (Time-Sert). The inserts have been tested by the OEM and met or exceeded the original parent thread testing requirements.

I've used several kinds of inserts successfully. The key to using them for head bolts/studs is to make sure the insert has enough threads to hold the torque when hot. With Helicoils the main reason they fail seems to be that the insert chosen is just too short for the job. In light alloys, I've doubled up on inserts while timing the threads with a custom mandrel, and in two cases I had to fabricate my own inserts as I couldn't find a commercial one that I considered long & strong enough. Unless you own a lathe and other such tools, it may be time to call a local pro shop. Joe Fontana is still around in So-Cal, you know. Good luck- J Deryke

I had a similar issue in some aluminum heads several years ago. I
talked to an engine builder that was supplying parts to me. He
turned
me on to Rockmount solid inserts. They work like helicoils, but they
are solid - not a spring.
This was 3/8ths though, and not as critical as head studs. You drill
slightly larger than what's required by helicoils. The insert cuts
the
threads. There are different brands of solid inserts, and I'm sure
you
can get them in several sizes - maybe even custom.
My point is it is fixable, but talk to the pros. If possible, have
them do the repairs.
