[DeTomaso] DeTomaso Digest, Vol 199, Issue 26

Hi ALL, I would suggest a STEEL oil pan, sure I make cast aluminum pans
though they are 1/2" thick.
The aluminum "sheet metal" pan will soften and could crack after time due
to the heat/cooling cycles of normal engine operation.
Then there is the internal "windage" inside the crankcase that will cause
the pan to flex.

Hi ALL, I would suggest a STEEL oil pan, sure I make cast aluminum pans
   though they are 1/2" thick.
The aluminum "sheet metal" pan will soften and could crack after time
due to the heat/cooling cycles of normal engine operation.
Then there is the internal "windage" inside the crankcase that will
   cause the pan to flex.

I am aboutA to order an Armando Oil pan for my aluminum block 400CI
     build.
A I have been told that the model 400 was the one I want for the
     Pantera,
but there is a model 404 listed on their website (below) that states
     it is
     for a Pantera.
Anybody have first-hand knowledge of the fit between them?

A I'm just guessing but the 400 looks like the sump is too wide to

     Pantera,
but there is a model 404 listed on their website (below) that states

Does your aluminum block have a Windsor or Cleveland oil pan bolt
pattern? For 351C pattern you want the #404 pan (the 400 is front
sump Mustang pan for a 351W). If you have a Windsor style block,
they will make the #404 in a Windosr style bolt pattern although it
may not be listed on the website.
I cannot recall whether it is Aviaid or Armando that now only
includes a temp bung on request, but worth verifying if you want to
run an oil temperature gauge.. Personally, I rely on the oil temp
     more than water temp.

I?m surprised they list the Windsor pans as fitting 351C also. That
must surely be a mistake, or? Or is it just the general outline of
the pan and they start with a Windsor or Cleveland pan when they
     build them?

Yes, you tell them what kind of motor you are working with and they
build a Pantera pan on a stock donor pan for that motor. Aviaid does
     it the same way.
(Armando worked for Aviaid for years before he set off on his own,
essentially building Aviaid pans under his own name).

In recent years Kevko have gotten into the Pantera pan market as
well, with a Cleveland or Windsor variant. Kevko sell pickup tubes
separately whereas Armando & Aviaid supply a pickup tube & strainer
     with a pan purchase.

A A In recent years Kevko have gotten into the Pantera pan market

A A Yes, you tell them what kind of motor you are working with and
     they
A A build a Pantera pan on a stock donor pan for that motor. Aviaid

     A A the same way.

I have a Cleveland Kevco pan from 9 years ago. The pickup was a
separate part number. It?s a built-from-scratch piece and I believe
it originated as a circle-track part.

Yes, you tell them what kind of motor you are working with and they
build a Pantera pan on a stock donor pan for that motor. Aviaid does
     it the same way.
(Armando worked for Aviaid for years before he set off on his own,
essentially building Aviaid pans under his own name).

That must surely be a mistake, or? Or is it just the general outline
of the pan and they start with a Windsor or Cleveland pan when they
     build them?

I had Armando build a pan for me last year, or maybe it was the year
     before.A I have a Dart block that takes a 351W pan.
The PN wasn't on their website.A I called and told Armando what I
     wanted - "351W in a Pantera".A That's all it took.

That must surely be a mistake, or? Or is it just the general outline
of the pan and they start with a Windsor or Cleveland pan when they
     build them?

     Scott,
I can?t tell them apart. They are nominally identical. Armando used
to make them when he worked at Aviaid and uses exactly the same
process now that he is on his own.A So I think it?s fair to say
     they are identical.
