[DeTomaso] Need Collective Wisdom: To Undercoat or Not?

When I did the engine bay of 6328 13 years ago (gads, that long ago . . . !)
I used 3M Body Schutz. Very easy to apply and does all of the things you
refer to below. I'll talk to Keith to see what he knows about it.

You'll probably get a lot of opinions, but as you say I think it's a case of
intended use combined with what climate you live in.

I do personally believe that the rubberized undercoating's from the likes of
3M are probably the best way to go under fenders etc. to prevent rock chips
etc., particularly if you are using a stickier compound summer tire. Sealing
up gaps and openings for water spray are probably as equally important for
those in the Pacific North West!

I know there are a plethora of bedliner materials available now, but in
talking with someone whom had done some time ago it they said it was
terrible for retaining dust and hard to wipe down.

I will have the same question when 6328 nears that point in her restoration
as I have decided to have my guy take it down to bare metal. One question I
would think is what do you intend to do with the car when it's back
together? If the (correct) answer is drive it, as I intend to do, I'll
likely have some form of undercoating/rust/noise/moisture protection put
back onto the bottom of the car and in the wheel wells. We'll see what the
recommendations are. Right now I'm leaning towards a bed-liner type product
for the engine bay, a fine-texture variety such as what Larry Finch had on
his car (Larry?), so may carry that over to the underside.

All,

Please give me your opinions and wisdom on undercoating: should someone
re-undercoat after a complete strip down and removal of all old undercoating
and subsequent painting? Why or why not? How about replacing undercoating
with a bedliner product?

I'm stripping undercoating off the bottom of my car and I can't stand the
stuff. I have to admit that it isn't hiding stuff on my car and appears to
have done an okay job of rust prevention.
