[DeTomaso] Throttle cable length problem

When I had the axle to bearing miss fit with axles from a vendor, I called another and he measured his same style axles and told me the diameters. Turned out to measure same as what I had ( this was on second go around with first vendor ). So I thanked him and had my new bad axles sent out for hard chrome plating an ground to my specs.

Bud,
Thanks for your last post as it gave me a little chuckle.
On the surface your idea is totally logical, but when you insert a
Pantera vendor into the equation things tend to get difficult.
At least one vendor is unable/unwilling to provide an accurate
reproduction and instead builds one with dimensions that simply will
not work. I have serious doubts that a request for their product's
construction dimensions would provide anything of value.
Obviously they do not understand the concept of measure twice, cut
once.

If you knew/know length needed, could you not get vendor to state
dimensions of his product prior to placing an order. If we had
dimensions listed some where, we could state to vendor what we had to
have.

Larry,
Perhaps in similar fashion to the parts interchange spreadsheet, we
should start a spreadsheet of vendor parts that don't fit? If other
owners have experienced similar issues and no one is prepared to call
out the vendor publicly on a specific part to forewarn other owners,
then in my opinion that's just as much a part of the problem,
collectively we are a much stronger voice.

Mike,
Thanks for your offer to provide dimensions. However, I do have my
old
cable and have been reviving it with some long needed cleaning and it
looks like it will serve. I am also documenting all of the cable's
dimensions. I was buying a new cable, just because it was new, and
was
going to keep my old as a traveling spare.
As you noted, the housing can be lengthened to any length, but the
cable needs to reflect the same additional length. What happened with
this assembly is the cable length stayed the same despite the
lengthening of the housing.
No Worky.
I received a private email from another owner that had similar
problems, and he needed to resort to modifications similar to what
you
related.
I know we all like to honor our vendors and thank them for their
service. But on a part like this, thousands of which were
manufactured
by Ford and successfully installed in thousands of cars, there is NO
REASON why replacements shouldn't likewise be universally correct and
proper.
The vendor did offer to accept a return and give me appropriate store
credit, which I am fine with.
Come Monday I will contact other vendors and likely wind up buying
two
or three more prospects. Perhaps one of our vendors actually knows
how
to correctly reproduce this part.
Perhaps I should count my blessings that I didn't just revive and
reinstall the old cable, and carry the new vendor cable unopened in
it's plastic bag, only to discover in a time of need, far from home,
that it was a piece of junk that wouldn't fit.
Maybe if all of us would raise enough of a stink when they sell us
parts that don't fit, the vendors might actually get their act
together
and stop foisting this crap on us.
Ma Dickers!
