[DeTomaso] Throttle cable length problem

All,

I went to install a vendor-sourced throttle cable the other night and ran into a problem. I have talked to the vendor and he told me he made his assembly longer (about two inches) than the stock assembly and said this was done due to the tight radius problem. ??? To me that doesn’t seem to offer much of a solution as the curve the cable takes is still more or less the same.

If he had lengthened the housing AND the inner cable, I don’t think there would be a problem. But he only lengthened the housing and the cable remains the same length.

So with the carburetor/return spring end of the cable sitting at rest, spring uncompressed, the free cable (what extends outside of the housing) at the throttle pedal end is 2 inches shorter.

Thus, when the cable assembly ....housing... is mounted to the center tunnel bracket, the ...cable... does not reach the gas pedal fitting.

I can pull out the ...cable to reach the gas pedal fitting but in doing so I am compressing the carburetor return spring and that opens the carburetor throttle plates.

Of course the vendor told me he has sold 3 million of these cables, or thereabouts, and no one has ever had a problem. I am left wondering if I somehow received an incorrectly manufactured cable, or despite all my head scratching, there is something obvious that I am missing.

If anyone has a similar experience and/or can add any wisdom that I may be missing, it would be greatly appreciated.

Larry
