If the screws are Philips head, a trick I saw in Family Handyman magazine was to place a rubber band in between the screwdriver tip and the screw’s Philips head cross.
Also, if you can get to the inside of the door, shoot some penetrating oil at the screws threads and let them sit for a day before you attempt to loosen them.
