[DeTomaso] Fwd: my friend NRE Pantera

Mike,
Yes, I later found reference to Dean selling off his front clip doors etc. in converting his 1984 GT5 to fiberglass. If I recall he had problems getting a title in the UK and it ended up as a race car and was ultimately the Group 5 Pantera that Dave Kanahale owned (Chassis #9313) and which he sold to Spain not too long ago.

Julian,
Believe it or not, that is a different car. Dean Martin had almost the same story. He was driving along and spotted a wing sticking up from the sand alongside an auto repair shop—nothing else was visible. He thought it was a Countach. He went in and asked to excavate it. The people there didn’t know what it was. It was a GT5, and I think it was red. He was able to get it and export it to England (not an easy task). His had little if any rust, if I recall.

Mike,
The 'free' Saudi Pantera found by Mark McFegan was chassis #9189, it turned up back in Saudi around July 2018 as a recently purchased silver chassis, so I don't think it was the chassis that Nelson Racing(NRE) used. I couldn't get a chassis number from them at the time, but it was definitely a 9000 series and they cut all the internal sheet metal out and put it in the dumpster! My suspicion was (and still is) that it is 9103 that had sold not long before on eBay as it had group 4 flares similar to that which the NRE chassis caries.

All,
I bet this is Dean Martin’s old car.
(No, not the singer, but the Englishman of the same name who discovered a factory GT5 buried up to its wing in a sand pile in Saudi Arabia, got it for free (!) then brought it home to England, screwed it all up turning it into a wannabe race car, crashed it, brought it to California when he moved to the USA, had Don Byars start to fix it for him, then skipped town and abandoned the car, leaving a huge unpaid bill.....)
