[DeTomaso] Tach & Speedo Mounting Options?

Hi all. Like many of you I have removed my speedo and tach for various reasons such as lightbulb replacement, speedo cable adjustments, electrical connections on the back etc. I recently got my tach out through the normal 1) remove driver’s seat, 2) lay on back on floor, 3) jam my hands into the tiny places to get to the knurl nuts holding the speedo/tach in place and then 4) removing tach or speedo from front of dash. Some folks also remove the speedo just to get to the tach knurl nuts on the tach. This is all especially fun with the late model single pod dash. There’s got to be a better way…….

I recently remembered when I owned my 80’s era Porsche 911s and I always admired their great engineering. They used a simple rubber gasket around all the instruments that allowed for easy push in/pull out maintenance. I wonder, has anyone adapted this idea for the Pantera? I have heard of folks experimenting with layers of tape around the speedo or tach to provide a good friction fit to the dashboard.

I don’t take my speedo or tach out often but when I need to it’s definitely a lot harder than my old Porsche 911sc. I did a bit of quick research and found that pelican parts sells the Porsche 911 rubber instrument mounting gaskets for $12 and they are 115mm diameter. This is slightly bigger than our Pantera instrument case diameter. Not sure if it would work. Anyone ever try this approach with good success?
