[DeTomaso] Installing Edelbrock Carb

I would also suggest a custom tailored carb, as opposed to an off-the-shelf
from anyone, especially if your engine is far from stock.

I bought a PPC carb, advertised as being "Tuned for a Pantera". I had a
terrible time getting that engine to run properly, and in retrospect I
shouldn't have been surprised. What is a "Pantera engine"? A 1974 stock
247hp smog controlled engine? A 1971 high compression version? A 408 stroker
with 500hp? Low lift cam, high lift, all these engines are completely
different, and if one carb could be configured to run optimally on all these
engines, they would come that way from the factory and wouldn't need
changeable jets, cams, etc.

After I got tired to experimenting with the different settings, I sent my
carb to Chuck Nuytten, and when I got it back I put it on my car and just
went. The engine ran fantastically.. Chuck Engels recommended this shop to
me, and I was very happy. Spend the money to have someone configure it for
YOUR engine instead of a generic one, especially if your engine is far from
generic.

My 2 cents.

Dear Tim,

In that case, then consider Plan C: have a custom carb built
that is custom tailored to your engine.

                     https://www.competitioncarburetion.com/

Bob Oliver is the owner-operator in Reno, Nevada and he has done
carbs for Panteras before. I recommend him highly.

                           Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

I tried to get one of the PPC tuner carbs 1 or 2 months ago and the message
I received from Larry was that they are not available anymore. Let us know
if that has changed.

Cheers, Tim

Why not try one of the "tuner" carbs advertised in POCA Profiles by PPC in
Carson City?

        - it boasts performance increases, good fuel economy ("if you can
keep your foot out of it"), and would come with customer support.

It's been set up for the Pantera / 351C, and I would assume that the linkage
is standard, with no mods required to make it work.

You could write a review of its performance and your experience.

Chuck

The Edelbrock AFB and AVS carbs are indeed Carter designs but the AFB is a
descendent of Carter's earlier WCFB. Carter introduced the first US
production 4 barrel carb in 1952 on the Buick straight 8. It was known as
the WCFB for Wil Carter Four Barrel. Made of iron and zinc with an aluminum
top cover, it weighed in at a hefty 18 pounds. The Carter AFB (Aluminum
Four Barrel) was introduced in 1957 and shared the WCFB's 2 piece design,
stepped rod in jet arrangement for primary metering and enrichment and air
valve secondaries but is much lighter due to its aluminum construction. The
Edelbrock AFB is based upon the second generation Carter AFB. Rochester's
first 4 barrel, the 4-Jet (4G or 4GC) was also introduced in 1952. It does
have a passing similarity to the AFB but is a fixed jet design with spring
loaded secondary air door (similar to the AVS, the AFB used a
counter-weight). Holley followed a year later with the 2140 "Teapot" 4
barrel which looks nothing like an AFB or later Holley 4150 modular design.
