[DeTomaso] Installing Edelbrock Carb

Personally, I don't see the point.

The old Holley carburetors didn't change for years, but maybe 15 years ago there were several advances by 3rd parties - Quick Fuel Technology, Proform, etc.

The current Holley carburetors have incorporated all of those advances.

My Ultra HP feels about 1/2 the weight of a traditional Holley. The metering block looks night/day different from a classic Holley. The fuel bowls are larger. It has built-in sight glasses (for fuel level), 4-corner idle, no choke (which I prefer), billet baseplate, all aluminum construction, and so on.

In other words, 20 years ago a tuner carburetor made sense. These days, if you want a Holley style carburetor, just buy an off-the-shelf carburetor - but get one of the new designs.

Btw, in my recent road trip, I got 18-20 mpg. This is with a 4" crank, std bore, Dart 351W block, medium sized hydraulic roller cam, A3 heads, single plane intake, and 180-deg headers. The only carburetor mod was going down 3 sizes on jets.

I tried to get one of the PPC tuner carbs 1 or 2 months ago and the
message I received from Larry was that they are not available anymore.
Let us know if that has changed.

       Cheers, Tim

Why not try one of the "tuner" carbs advertised in POCA Profiles by PPC
       in Carson City?
               - it boasts performance increases, good fuel economy ("if you
can keep your foot out of it"), and would come with customer support.
It's been set up for the Pantera / 351C, and I would assume that the
linkage is standard, with no mods required to make it work.
You could write a review of its performance and your experience.

The Edelbrock AFB and AVS carbs are indeed Carter designs but the AFB
       is a
descendent of Carter's earlier WCFB. Carter introduced the first US
production 4 barrel carb in 1952 on the Buick straight 8. It was known
       as
the WCFB for Wil Carter Four Barrel. Made of iron and zinc with an
aluminum top cover, it weighed in at a hefty 18 pounds. The Carter AFB
(Aluminum Four Barrel) was introduced in 1957 and shared the WCFB's 2
       piece
design, stepped rod in jet arrangement for primary metering and
       enrichment
and air valve secondaries but is much lighter due to its aluminum
construction. The Edelbrock AFB is based upon the second generation
       Carter
       AFB. Rochester's first 4 barrel, the 4-Jet (4G or 4GC) was also
       introduced
in 1952. It does have a passing similarity to the AFB but is a fixed
       jet
design with spring loaded secondary air door (similar to the AVS, the
       AFB
used a counter-weight). Holley followed a year later with the 2140
"Teapot" 4 barrel which looks nothing like an AFB or later Holley 4150
       modular design.
