[DeTomaso] Speaking of EFI--Water Temp Sensor Question

Rich,

I mentioned your solution to Dennis Quella and he went to a block in his shop, checked it out, and called me. First, I have to congratulate you on coming up with such a simple and direct solution. I think Dennis had the same reaction to your fix as I did—why didn’t I or anyone else (other than you) think of that? He recommended locating it closer to the distributor than the thermostat because from what he could tell, the casting provided more room there. The sensor that comes with the Sniper is pretty tall on the outside, so I may have to locate the temp gauge sender there and put the EFI sensor in the gauge location which makes no difference as you know.

Before your input, I also thought about putting the EFI sensor in the block where the water flows to the heater core (I had the tube pulled out and the hole tapped for NPT). But, I was concerned that the water coming out of the pump (Edelbrock with an inlet and outlet) might not get nearly as hot as the water coming from the block. Living where I do, it may not have mattered because I rarely if ever would use the heater, but I would occasionally make use of the defroster, like during the Fun Rally in Conroe years ago.

Thanks again Rich, you saved me some heartburn. Much appreciated. And many thanks to everyone else who chimed in—Thomas’ fix was my fall back solution.

I know the top fitting is the inlet feeding the pump, not sure if there’s enough pressure at the other fitting to circulate the water, or if the water is hot enough if not fed from where you have the EFI sensor.

If I have to, I can connect the garage there and hope I don’t have an issue with water temp, but that would be pretty risky. He suggested drilling a head. CHI’s are billet, so it’s not obvious where the water jacket is. I’d have to ask them for a template or at least some guidance on where to drill if that’s where I end up...

I’m very reluctant to drill into the front of one of the heads (CHI 4V). I understand teeing off the current water temp sensor for the gauge will not yield accurate water temps.
