Makes sense Fred, thanks.  This however was a situation where the AC
condenser was knocking around in the attic of my garage for 15 years after I
pulled it off, moving it around without paying attention to what was on the
bottom and where I was setting it down.  Mia culpa.

To prevent this situation from happening, prior to working on, or near, a
radiator I put a sheet of cardboard, cut to size, over it for protection.
After I remove the radiator I put a sheet of cardboard over the other side
of the radiator.  
They stay in place until the radiator has been installed.
