The pressure on the back of the spring comes from a cover secured with two bolts. A series of almost impossibly thin shims between the underside of the cover and the rack housing sets the preload. Removing even one of these shims can have a pronounced effect on the steering. In rare instances it can remove unwanted slop, but most of the time it creates binding. Bad news.
