[DeTomaso] Ruined rack

Joseph,

The backlash between the ring and pinion gears is controlled by a plunger with a coil-bound spring. The pressure on the back of the spring comes from a cover secured with two bolts. A series of almost impossibly thin shims between the underside of the cover and the rack housing sets the preload. 

Removing even one of these shims can have a pronounced effect on the steering. In rare instances it can remove unwanted slop, but most of the time it creates binding. Bad news. 

The fool who rebuilt this one got rid of ALL of the shims!
