Chuck,

That car is a 1967 Ghia 450SS.

Exactly 52 of them were ever made so you won’t likely find one in a junkyard anytime soon.

I had the privilege of driving a 450SS from the San Francisco area all the way to Fred Phillips collection in Calgary, in Canada, which is a pretty great distance in any case, but is made especially greater when you consider the car had no brakes.

I was warned that the cars brakes were ‘a bit weak’ but only after I started out did I discover that three of the four brakes were completely inoperative, and only the right front had some very slight, residual retardation effect when the pedal was firmly on the mat. Fortunately the chosen routing featured only very open, remote roads through the deserts and prairies so it wasn’t nearly as bad as you might expect. A lot of planning, timely downshifting of the automatic transmission, and plenty of luck saw me though.

(Fred subsequently bought a second one, and now I think he has three of the 52).

Interestingly, I was in Modena for unrelated reasons back in 2004, and stopped by to visit the folks at the De Tomaso factory. A gentleman driving a silver 450SS was just leaving as I arrived. I have no idea who it might have been.

The cars themselves are fascinating, really cool actually. It’s a good story.

   Chuck,

   That car is a 1967 Ghia 450SS.

Exactly 52 of them were ever made so you won't likely find one in a
   junkyard anytime soon.

I had the privilege of driving a 450SS from the San Francisco area all
the way to Fred Phillips collection in Calgary, in Canada, which is a
pretty great distance in any case, but is made especially greater when
you consider the car had no brakes.

I was warned that the cars brakes were `a bit weak' but only after I
started out did I discover that three of the four brakes were
completely inoperative, and only the right front had some very slight,
residual retardation effect when the pedal was firmly on the mat.
Fortunately the chosen routing featured only very open, remote roads
through the deserts and prairies so it wasn't nearly as bad as you
might expect. A lot of planning, timely downshifting of the automatic
transmission, and plenty of luck saw me though.

(Fred subsequently bought a second one, and now I think he has three of
   the 52).

Interestingly, I was in Modena for unrelated reasons back in 2004, and
stopped by to visit the folks at the De Tomaso factory. A gentleman
driving a silver 450SS was just leaving as I arrived. I have no idea
   who it might have been.

The cars themselves are fascinating, really cool actually. It's a good
   story.

What is worthy of note is that this car has the same push-button
   latch
     as the
     Mangustas and Push-Button Panteras.
