What a blast racing at PIR Yesterday was with our Pantera’s yesterday.
Sorry no photographs as Lee didn’t show up as promised to take
photos😑...yea we need somebody to blame
😂
All day long our Pantera and MARY Ann’s Alpha Stelvio, and Doug’s wild
Ford Focus we’re kicking ass all day. 95% of the field were the usual
Vettes, SHELBY Mustangs, Porsche, etc. there were as earlier reported
no other vintage automobiles who showed up to race. Well okay one
beautiful 69 boss 302 with race history but but broke before he ever got
it untrailered.
Here is my Mad Dawg analysis of each of the team
Dick & Matt Abraham -
TPR Iron Man Award
Never raced or been to PIR before and brings both 74 Pantera’s and he
and his son who also who had never raced a Pantera before KILLED it all
day long.
What impressed me most about Dick and his Pantera’s is other then some
interesting modifications you would have never guessed that both engines
had NEVER been cracked open...think about that. Nor had Matt ever driven
on the track in a Pantera. And Dick brought BOTH Pantera’s?
All I can say is WOW...well done !
Randy Grubb -
Fastest Pantera of the Day
And all day long no one ran harder then Randy did repeatedly passing
with ease other competition in his group. Equally impressive is his
engine which is an original unstroked block. Some serious alum race
heads and a stack of well tuned Weber’s which sounded sweet but he just
ran over everyone in his field and had a smile on his face all day long.
Which brought smiles to the entire team all day long.
Doug & Terry Braun -
The Best & Funnest Support Team
Making all of us laugh all day and all weekend. If it wasn’t Doug’s
hilarious bad jokes or Terry’s counter punching him constantly I don’t
think we would or could have enjoyed Thursday and Friday so well. And
Doug proved he is a hot shoe himself drifting around slower drivers all
day long.
Mary Ann Altamirano Antenucci
Okay she is as fast in that Alfa as she is beautiful and you can tell
her I wrote that too. Okay first time ever on any track and she just
killed it. But think about this...she doesn’t get the need for speed.
She grew up in the City in SF and while she could slam gears on her 3 on
the tree hot rod Rambler she was no more interested in getting on a race
track as I am interested in getting my nails done. And yet she came out
and joined us and while down playing her phobia of going fast the
ultimate compliment was from a fellow racer following her who said how
smooth she was in the corners! I am thinking are you talking about the
same woman I know who would rather walk then drive?
Yea that be her
🥰
Thanks to the entire team because if they had never showed up it would
just be another day at the track.
We are already planning next year’s return possibly to a hill climb
which Randy will report on later.
Good Times & New Good friends!!!

Some of you asked me about what it takes to prepare a 40+ year old
Pantera for an open track event. Should be about the same list for a
road trip.
The answer is pretty much the same as it was decades ago. And that is
if you don't have access to a lift then jack the Pantera up and set
4-jack stands under your car. Make sure you have some good light and
then just thoroughly go over the chassis and suspension from front to
back starting with the steering rack and bushings, cooling, brakes, and
every nut and bolt, hose, clamp, looking for worn or damaged parts that
should be replaced to include cracked (sometimes hairline) mag or
billet wheels and that can go unnoticed because the cracking is
difficult to visually identify and usually is on the 'inside' of the
wheels.
Tires of course should also get your full attention, and at least a OEM
stock 3-point harness or a full 5-point race harness (4 point harnesses
are no longer allowed). Once you have checked everything including
electrical, check it again and I like drafting a friend or car savvy
neighbor to be a second set of eyes....hopefully younger then my own
Emoji
Both Randy and Dick have paid very close attention to detail and
preserving solid rust free Pantera's. All 74's except Randy's Pantera
had to be registered as a 73 to pass smog. While they both have race
and autocross experience what makes them and most Pantera owner's
unique here is that they do the overwhelming majority of all the
repairs and maintenance themselves.
Having spent so many years working and living in California I had
access to early Pantera racers like Mike Cook and the Byers Brothers
and the vendors any day I needed advise or work done. Not so easy for
Randy and Dick and all of you living up here in the Pacific Northwest
or Canada.
I have spent a little time down in Grants Pass with Randy Grubb and as
some of you know Randy has a storied career as a successful artist,
fabricator and metal bender.
Whether it was building the V12 powered Blastolne Special Land Speed
Record Car, that Randy powered with a Patton Tank engine and Allison
transmission out of a Grayhound bus, with a one off custom bell housing
which Jay Leno purchased or one of hundreds of other show winning
custom builds his talent is well known the world over.
And yet for all that fame he has chosen to live a humble life in Grants
Pass Oregon. But all that talent aside he and his equally amazing wife
Jeannete are the friendliest and supportive neighbors you could ever
find. Randy is way too young to celebrate his life here in this short
message but if you are interested more I hope you will stop by to meet
him if you haven't already done so at PIR next Friday, May 3.
Yes, of course Dick and his son and the Dawg will be there too....but
Randy is the celebrity of note. And if you can not make it next Friday
then just goggle Randy Grubb and there is a wealth of information on
line about his life.
I've enclosed just a couple teaser photos of Randy's Pantera. One is of
his impeccable engine bay with the best sounding Webers I have ever
heard on a Cleveland engine and one of his custom fabricated aluminum
rear deck lid which feels like it can't be much more then 15 pounds.
Dick and I are having lunch on Wednesday and while many of you know
Dick he is bringing both his GTS and Pantera L to PIR. I am working
with allot of support to get ONE Pantera ready to run and Dick is
bringing two? Emoji

Right now we have 4 Pantera's registered to run at Portland
International Raceway Friday, May 3. And we have two more members (Mary
Ann Antenucci and Doug Braun) planning to run their 'other' rides which
should be just as much fun.
The attached link includes 31 entries to date.
But of that number there are only 4 vintage automobiles entered and
they are ALL De Tomaso Pantera's! Think about that as it is something
we can all be proud of. That example pretty much follows every other
open track or open road race event I have participated in up and down
the west coast. No club ever shows up to race 3 or more vintage
authomobiles. It just doesn't happen EXCEPT with owner's of
Pantera's.
So if you miss the link here are those planning to run:
1. Allen "Dick" Abraham
1974 Pantera GTS
2. Matthew Abraham
1974 Pantera L
3. Randy Grubb
1974 Pantera L
4. Mad Dawg
1972 Pantera
5. Mary Ann Antenucci
2018 Alfa Romeo Stelvio
6. Doug Braun
2015 Ford Focus ST
Others I know who are working/wrenching/painting/polishing a Pantera
are Lee Peterson, Ron Wade, and Dave Londry. and probably others who
are flying under the radar or those I forgot....but honestly when the
SoCal boyz can't get more then one Pantera to Willow Springs what you

And registration is still OPEN so if you think you can still get your
Pantera or any other ride ready we would love to have you join us for
the fun on that day. I think certain members of our group may have
already placed some wagers of which I know nothing about Emoji
But its all about having some fun and enjoying some camaraderie. And
that is exactly what we are going to do.
Everyone else?
Come out and join us.
