[DeTomaso] p72 .... What does it really mean?

Dear Rob,

I agree with John. It will enhance the marque---slightly. It will expose more people to DeTomaso and it is a real car of imposing specifications and price.

I don’t see that it is an important step to the resurrection of the DeTomaso marque and manufacturing. I recall reading a commentator discussing the availability of engineering, manufacturing, carbon fiber, turbos, potent engines, electronic engine and suspension and transmission control, etc. His point was that with enough money building a sports car or an exotic or a supercar is not all that difficult. What is difficult is marketing and selling such a parvenue sports car without a pedigree or history.

The point he made was that the racing history of DeTomaso does not equal the 20th century record of Ferrari or Porsche, but there *is* a history. History cannot be manufactured (outside of politics and Hollywood) for powerful and potent sports cars.

From what little I know, the manufacturer could have just as easily chosen a tribute 21st century supercar to Maserati or Lancia, however those marques have real world current owners and their historical accomplishments and cachet are not available for purchase. DeTomaso was available for purchase and did have some real victories in their competition history. Thus, the marketable combination of the underlying Lambo foundation with the tribute lovely P70 body work and the DeTomaso history equal the new DeTomaso sports car.

I would like to see the company leap into production of the second coming of DeTomaso, but I suspect that this will end up being a limited edition DeTomaso iteration of a Lamborghini Aventador foundation.

My off the cuff contribution to the armchair discussion.

                        Philosophically yours, Chuck Engles

Enhance, as it will potentially make others curious of the De Tomaso history and the cars he built.
