In the early 80s I had a Pontiac Ventura with a set of headers on it. I bolted on a set of glass packs to the headers and some straight pipe back. I got a fix it ticket so of to a muffler shop I went with the copper steel wool and chicken screen. The steel screen went into the end and then tack welded the screen on the end so as not to lose the steel wool. When I had a cop sign off my ticket he asked me to rev it up thank god he never looked under the car it was whisper quiet ha ha.

I was flagged over, and revved up the Norton, and got a fit it ticket. I was a little ticked off because I had stock exhaust, and went by the local Highway Patrol office to ask them to actually measure the sound level. Before I could explain why I was there, and office asked me to start the bike. This time I didn't rev it much, and he signed off and I was done. So I guess the message is, don't make more noise than you have to.

Bikes, exotic and muscle cars with loud exhausts were never ticketed, unless you were showing off and reviving the engine like mad. I had several close calls while driving my car (tourists are too busy gawking at the scenery then to watch for other vehicles), but that went to zero after I installed a set of Flowmaster 10s.
