[DeTomaso] "prototype" 71 on ebay for $40K???

Jim,

Heavens no. The OEMs build literally hundreds of preproduction prototypes before the first production car is produced. De Tomaso built far fewer than that, but this was literally a handbuilt car with innumerable minor differences from even the early production Panteras. (The owner believes a standard Pantera windshield wot fit, but I believe he is very wrong there, and was trying to fit an aftermarket windshield that doesn't fit standard cars either).

Nowadays such cars can't be sold to the public. In fact this car probably couldn't be sold in the USA, so after its time as a certification car, it was returned to Italy and sold there. 

One of the early owners was a US Army officer, a colonel I think, who was assassinated by the Red Brigades terrorist group, supposedly while in the Pantera (unconfirmed). 

It later came to the USA, where it was restored by a friend of Mike Trusty in Arkansas. He then sold it to the Florida guy, probably 20 years ago or so.
