[DeTomaso] Headlight conversion (Rick Shawver)

Only time H-4's draw more power is when you use the higher wattage bulbs.

I personally like the 7" lamp look. So I installed relays. I have the Cibie 7" #82440 housings with H-4 bulbs and they are very good. I like their European beam pattern which has a very definite top cut-off on the low beams. With the Cibie headlight assemblies you have a separately replaceable H-4 bulb manufactured by Hella, Sylvania, Phillips, China, etc. The H-4 bulbs have 1/4" spade connectors and fit the (my stock) Panera's electrical connector.

Now days you could just install LEDs and avoid the light relays. There are 100's of LED bulbs available, which I have not yet tried.

Here is an article on installing relays for the lights, headlights and the ignition switch at the same time since they are both in the same area under the dash..

Caution on the h4 bulbs.  While they work great and are almost plug and
play, they do draw more power.  I fried two switches before adding relays
to support the extra power requirement.

Thanks Rick

Standard (European) H4 bulbs draw 55/60W.

I assume all European DeTomasos had H4 bulbs from factory.

Relays are a good idea in any case.

Before I did the SACC HID conversion, I was using LED bulbs by Vintage Car LEDs. The fit was perfect, light was bright (5,000K on my light meter) and power draw was minimal.

I'd be interested to know how much more light the HID gives out over the LED?

I did an LED bulb conversion on my Raptor and it was like night and day, hard to believe the HID would be better again.

Hi Hartwig
I tried to respond at the airbus.com address, but it bounced.

Did you get any response on the ZF question?
I'm always interested.

  Hi Hartwig
I tried to respond at the airbus.com address, but it bounced.

Did you get any response on the ZF question?
  I'm always interested.

  Hello from France,

The 934 CV's have a 128mm OD, 33 splines and use 12mm bolts vs. the 930's
108mm, 28 splines and 10mm bolts. In addition, most race shops carry
modified 934 CV's that have 35 splines and use half inch bolts.
Lightened/strengthened 930 CV's are common as are gun drilled 300M shafts.

Years ago, Gary Hall told me the splined, sliding part of the Pantera's
U-Jointed half-shafts locks-up under hard acceleration. As the wheels move
up and down, the splined shafts don't want to slide in and out. This creates
a vibration as the shafts "hammer" themselves in and out of the locked-up
coupling. CV joints don't suffer from this same lock-up issue, so
acceleration is much smoother.

As I rarely drive the car at night, I did the HID conversion primarily for looks - the smaller headlamp opening really trumps the frog eye look.  That said, the LED bulbs were much brighter than the HIDs. There are HID to LED conversations (I believe Hella also had LEDs in the HID size) which are now available. That upgrade is probably next on the list.

In Belgium we are not (yet) allowed to use LED headlights.

Why? I have no idea.... maybe politicians who have no idea what a car and
safety is.

Thanks for that valuable information Scott, I already have Amerisport 60mm quad lights on the GT5 with about a 3" open height on the light front and think it suits the wide body lines. The light output on the 60mm is better than I had with the previous 90mm version, I may now experiment with an LED bulb in them.

I did an LED bulb conversion on my Raptor and it was like night and day, hard to believe the HID would be better again.

-------------- next part --------------
Only time H-4's draw more power is when you use the higher wattage
   bulbs.
I personally like the 7" lamp look. So I installed relays. I have the
Cibie 7" #82440 housings with H-4 bulbs and they are very good. I like
their European beam pattern which has a very definite top cut-off on
the low beams. With the Cibie headlight assemblies you have a
separately replaceable H-4 bulb manufactured by Hella, Sylvania,
Phillips, China, etc. The H-4 bulbs have 1/4" spade connectors and fit
the (my stock) Panera's electrical connector.
Now days you could just install LEDs and avoid the light relays. There
are 100's of LED bulbs available, which I have not yet tried.
Here is an article on installing relays for the lights, headlights and
the ignition switch at the same time since they are both in the same
   area under the dash..

Caution on the h4 bulbs. While they work great and are almost plug and
play, they do draw more power. I fried two switches before adding
   relays
to support the extra power requirement.
   Thanks Rick

Standard (European) H4 bulbs draw 55/60W.
I assume all European DeTomasos had H4 bulbs from factory.
Relays are a good idea in any case.

Before I did the SACC HID conversion, I was using LED bulbs by Vintage
Car LEDs. The fit was perfect, light was bright (5,000K on my light
meter) and power draw was minimal.

I'd be interested to know how much more light the HID gives out over
   the LED?
I did an LED bulb conversion on my Raptor and it was like night and
day, hard to believe the HID would be better again.

I'd be interested to know how much more light the HID gives out over
     the LED?
I did an LED bulb conversion on my Raptor and it was like night and
day, hard to believe the HID would be better again.

   Vintage

The 934 CV's have a 128mm OD, 33 splines and use 12mm bolts vs. the
   930's
108mm, 28 splines and 10mm bolts. In addition, most race shops carry
modified 934 CV's that have 35 splines and use half inch bolts.
Lightened/strengthened 930 CV's are common as are gun drilled 300M
   shafts.
Years ago, Gary Hall told me the splined, sliding part of the Pantera's
U-Jointed half-shafts locks-up under hard acceleration. As the wheels
   move
up and down, the splined shafts don't want to slide in and out. This
   creates
a vibration as the shafts "hammer" themselves in and out of the
   locked-up
coupling. CV joints don't suffer from this same lock-up issue, so
   acceleration is much smoother.

As I rarely drive the car at night, I did the HID conversion primarily
for looks - the smaller headlamp opening really trumps the frog eye
look. That said, the LED bulbs were much brighter than the HIDs. There
are HID to LED conversations (I believe Hella also had LEDs in the HID
size) which are now available. That upgrade is probably next on the
   list.

As I rarely drive the car at night, I did the HID conversion
   primarily
for looks - the smaller headlamp opening really trumps the frog eye
look. That said, the LED bulbs were much brighter than the HIDs.
   There
are HID to LED conversations (I believe Hella also had LEDs in the
   HID
size) which are now available. That upgrade is probably next on the
     list.

In Belgium we are not (yet) allowed to use LED headlights.
Why? I have no idea.... maybe politicians who have no idea what a car

Thanks for that valuable information Scott, I already have Amerisport
60mm quad lights on the GT5 with about a 3" open height on the light
front and think it suits the wide body lines. The light output on the
60mm is better than I had with the previous 90mm version, I may now
experiment with an LED bulb in them.

That upgrade is probably next on the
     list.
