[DeTomaso] The Restoration Files - Flush Windshield v/v Stock

I replaced mine with a flush mount for exactly the same reasons as you are contemplating, On my car with blacked out trim all around it looks just fine to 99+% of the population. I did save the gasket and trim for the next guy.

Possibly. I plan to retain the stainless trim around the windows, so likely
retaining the stainless trim around the 'shield would maintain the correct
look. All open for debate at this point and that is certainly what I seem
to have inspired.
As I mentioned in a reply to Mike Drew, I respect the opinion of the
collective, that's why I put it out there. I like to consider all
perspectives. I starts to become that 'caretaker' v/v 'owner' question.
When you have a classic car that you are working to maintain and remind the
world where we've been, you have to think about how what you are doing to
that car is carried forward to the next generation who will be taking the
torch. That's why it does pain me on frequent occasion when I see some of
the 'styling attempts' done on our cars.
My interest in the possibility of a flush windshield was as much for
practicality as aesthetics. My current 'shield is badly chipped and leaks
like a sieve in the rain, so I know I want to replace it. So far as I can
tell the seal is in good shape, still supple all 'round on the outside. I
know the 'shield is not original, so it could be that a slightly undersized
unit was installed, as I've heard has been the case with some aftermarket
replacements.
All the input is appreciated and will be weighed in the balance when I go
forward.
Thanks

And for comparison a blue car with glue in windshield. With a full
restoration I imagine you can get a better finish on the glue than a
straight removal and retrofit as this car had. Maybe it's the contrast of
the glue seam against the stainless trim that doesn't work and it would be
better with blacked out trim?

I thought the photo was small enough in size, but looks like this didn't get
through to the list first time;
Speaking of flush/glue in windshields, I took a photo of Roland Jaeckel's
Group 4 car at Le Mans Classic, specifically as I liked the way the his
windshield rubber looked. It is a one piece design that eliminates the
stainless trim and retains slightly more classic look than the full glue in
option. This is the route I would go.

I'm not you Mike and I don't know what you have planned. BUT you asked so
here's my opine.
My thinking is the end result will appear bone stock from the outside,
except for wheel/tire updates.
The real updates would not be obvious from the outside.
All other systems in the car could be updated to your liking but I'd still
retain the original look, including the raised shiny windshield frame.
I would repaint in the original color, what ever that may be. If the front
bonnet has had cooling vents added, I would make it smooth again.Wing? Gone.
Original motor? Preferred but not a deal breaker.
The funny thing is the Pantera seems to make you think it needs to be
"improved" more than most cars.
That's fine if the improvements address power, handling, reliability, safety
and comfort but any changes to appearance are not necessary in my book.
With a stock appearance the car will be worth more if that's important to
you.
I simply like the way it was originally designed and don't see a need to
modify the body other than a front spoiler if you want to go fast.
It all depends on how you plan to use it Mike. It is your car and life is
short so the bottom line is you can do anything you bloody well want!
Have fun,
Matt
