Hi Mike,

OK, am I understanding this right; this knob just opens the flap going
towards the foot wheel; it has nothing to do with any outside air entering
the car?
Does it mean that my car should not have any openings between wiper-motor
compartment and cabin/foot wheel?

In the past I always believed that knob (not lever) controlled the flapper
valve which introduces air to the back of the heater box on the 71 Cars.
However when you see how the knob is labeled:
