Unless you are experienced in upholstery work, it's extremely easy for people like me to botch this kind of work up. Nothing of what you want to do is easy. Uncut door panels are impossible to find and bulky/$$$ to ship, but simply recovering what you have, bridging over the 7" holes with whatever covering you choose, can be done. If you are the type to 'gild the lily', cut a 7" OD filler piece of pressed board and RTV it in the holes before covering the cut door panels. There is no stress on the area so this works unless you make a practice of kicking that area as you enter the car. Note that vendors can also recover cut panels for you. Some will perforate the new covering in a DeTomaso (or other) logo so, with speakers bolted to the inside of the inner door panels instead of the outside, sound will come out nicely but it not be apparent the panels were cut. Note that putting a leather cover over a stock door panel makes the door panel thicker so the lock buttons do not line up with OEM holes in a steel door. Another owner made huge triangular upholstered covers for his cut panels (see attached TIF).

Some have cut a 2-1/16" hole between the two big gauges on the dash for an oil temp gauge  But like you with your cut dash for a graphic equalizer, permanently altering the early speedo/tach binnacles is not advised. A '73 dash will not fit a '72 without lots of adaption because the heater/AC box with the defroster pipes & cabin heat outlets et al, were all changed. If you attempt this, its best to have a complete '73 alongside your '72 to see the differences and what's needed. The heater /defroster controls will also need work.  I'd contact some vendors for a repro fiberglas dash panel and start modifying that on the bench rather than locking your car in the garage for a year or so.

Stock kick panels were plastic and can be duplicated in light sheet aluminum, painted if you must. I accidently made mine of scrap titanium sheet (I thought it was aluminum!)  I've also done business with street rod upholstery shops for our Pantera. Good luck with your customizing.- J DeRyke

I have an early 72 Pre-L. A previous owner preferred aftermarket noise
as opposed to the symphonic purring exhaust tunes. I have removed the
tape deck and the graphic equalizer that was installed in front of the
passenger seat IN THE DASH! What was he thinking? I removed the dash
and will attempt a repair that looks more appealing. In doing this I
now need a set of stock early 72 door panels since mine were cut for
speakers. My kick panels were also hacked with speakers.

So I am looking for:

Door panels that can be recovered.

Kick panels

Also Has anyone ever modified the camel hump 72 dash with a piece that
brings the gauges together?

Thanks for any feedback or leads.

Dave
