So here Pantera Palooza 2018 was approaching; this to be my third of
three. I did not want to disappoint or endure any potential taunting
from San Diego Chapter President, Marshall Smith, for getting to
another event, LATE. So I booked a room at the Hyatt House in Irvine
just to ensure I'd be close enough with my Pantera to Mason Regional
Park early on May 6th. Better yet, I'd avoid the torture of any "time
dependent" freeway trip these days in a Pantera. Last year, what is
normally a little more than an hour's journey, took hours longer, due
to an accident. I also needed my car checked out as it's been more
difficult than usual when cold starting lately. Thus, I had my car
towed to Pantera Specialists on Saturday morning. I wanted my Webers
checked out and adjusted the day before the event by Lance Nist. I was
so grateful as he knows my car well, being the one who did the
conversion to the supercharged Group 5 years ago, before it was mine.
He is presently busily involved with other exotic ventures and his
business, Pantera EFI, making EFI systems for Panteras and others. Sure
enough Webers were clogged up from lack of use (i know...i know)! I
also decided to have my side wing windows removed, which facilitates
checking the hard to reach super charger oil without removing the whole
back behind the seats each time, as my brother, Arlan, had to do the
day before. As late afternoon approached and Webers now good to go, I
was on my way in search of Hyatt House, for my Cinco de Mayo night in
Irvine. I followed my phone's Google map directions, but it took me to
somewhere else, certainly not my hotel. I pulled over to recheck
address and directions. I noticed the gas gauge and temp. gauge had
stopped working. This has happened to me once before and it was a
blown fuse that controls those gauges and the fans as well. The
thinking is that 25 amp fuses aren't strong enough for my needs. I was
supposed to have the box changed in order accommodate a stronger one,
but hadn't done that yet. I only had a couple extra fuses left. By
the time I figured out which fuse it was, changed it, and answered all
questions of interested passers by, I was ready to proceed on my merry
way to the hotel. Success at last and the parking attendant was most
friendly and liked my car, so more questions to pleasantly answer.
Later that evening my trooper of a sister in law, Sandra, who loves car
events too, had agreed to join me for Palooza. Arlan, conveniently, had
work that day. She came down from the Valley and we and another friend
dined at Houstons. Next morning, as soon as the sun arose, I borrowed
my room's ice bucket, snagged a wash cloth and detailed my car. We then
enjoyed the complimentary great breakfast, all choices like the
omelette bar, fresh fruits, nuts, meats, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal,
juices, breads, good coffee, and lots more. The Hyatt does it right!
Another reason I can't wait to go back to the Hyatt Regency Monterey,
for the upcoming Forza De Tomaso event. After breakfast we packed up
and were Palooza bound. The car started nicely, more easily than what
has been before adjustment, replaced bad fuse, and we were off bright
and early for the event. I noticed part way there, the fuel gauge and
temperature gauge stopped working again, but alas, now out of
fuses. Thank goodness we only had 6 miles to Mason park.
We arrived at the park without issue; did my usual scenic drive-by in
the maze of park roads, then found the right entrance to our event.
Once again, the sight of the array of so many stunningly gorgeous
Panteras, Mangustas, and rare Fords, of every color, is eye opening and
mind blowing. I was directed as to where to park by (excuse me but)
the OCD parking monitor with definite evil tendencies, as he had me go
back and forth multiple times: a foot this way, 6" that way, 5" more
this way, 3" more that way, 1" more this way. So I got my muscle
building arm exercise for the morning. After all, it's not like
parking my little Fiat! One more order to move and I would have used my
kick boxing upper arm maneuver! Luckily I was situated in great
company and next to Don and Laura Byars' incredible blue, GR4FEVR,
"Best of Show Winner!" I had the honor of viewing that beautiful car
at "Full Throttle Panteras" in Lake Elsinore recently, before this
spectacular showing, and it is really something lovely to behold! I
asked Don about my fuse issue and he was most kind to take a look for
me. He found the fuse was loose and perhaps the movement caused it to
burn out.
Then, as usual, I mixed and mingled with so many good friends. Got to
be in another of the now famous Palooza Family Panorama Photos with my
best buddies and all the cars! Did the run around to take lots of
pictures at this extraordinary show that TPOC puts on. I try to get
every car and owner's name, and I love people pictures too. I also got
some shots of the neat raffle prizes, the excellent catered cuisine by
Dickey's Barbecue Pit, the POCA store, and the presentation of the many
awesome awards. My Sis 'n law's friend Loretta, another car gal, joined
us and brought her French Bulldog, Bingo. Bingo is black and white and
made the cutest model as he matches my car's interior. We all enjoyed
a great time and gathered around for a big group picnic under the trees
on this weather perfect day.
I did not retain the title of "Best Wide Body" as had been awarded to
me last year, but in a literal sense, that could be a blessing in
disguise. Later in the day, Donny Byars, who had recalled my fuse
dilemma, directed me to a fellow who had some extras. He was so nice
to remember and the fellow was kind enough to give me one for the
road! Pantera people are truly great! As a parting gift as driving
out, Scott Couchman handed everyone a little gift wrapped bottle of
tequila that added to the lavish goody bag everyone had gotten.
My award this year is self presented and it is for being ON TIME, in my
beautiful, gleaming, pearly white, monster of a Pantera.
Then, made one last Happy Hour stop with the gals at the Balboa Bay
Resort Club for a quiet moment by the harbor, and snack before
returning home. Thank you TPOC for a wonderful time! Tried to post a
couple pictures here but the whole letter came back, so I'll put them
on my Facebook and one of the Pantera pages.
Postscript... after getting home and moving cars around to tuck Pantera
back in to sleep, and exhausted beyond exhaust, My 2000 Corvette's
lights didn't turn off or retract after ignition was turned off. This
never happened before. That's another story but I'll spare you and save
that one for the Corvette Forum. Hopefully "JAFI" (just another fuse
issue).
