[DeTomaso] FW: Very Early Car on ebay (1293)

Something is goofy in two respects if both #1293s are legitimate. First, the numbers were  assigned by the Italian Gov't for serial production and the DeTomaso effort was a brand new source of Italian gov't revenue. There should have been many, many eyes on this at the first few months.

Second- concerning the letter designation for month of build, "LC" cars were built in January 1971 while 'LD' cars were built in March 1971- both apparently under DeTomaso's control since Ford was still fighting an uphill battle trying to get THEIR production facility up and running under U.S./Italian labor rules- that is, controlled chaos.

So IF there really IS an 'LC' car with that alphanumeric, it must ALSO have gotten kicked way out of the brand new pushbutton assembly line for some reason; the last 'C' car so listed (original registry) is way back to THPNLC01257- some 36 cars in between. THPNLD01294 is also listed (original registry), along with a whole bunch of sequentially earlier 'LD' cars. Panteras were selling like hotcakes in Europe, before U.S. magazine writers weighed in with their opinions, so to have a chassis just sitting around for 3 months seems unlikely.

Hard to believe TWO serial # mistakes happening on the same car: a rare duplicate number AND a non-sequential month designation. So I highly doubt the 'LC' car actually exists as stated. Some possible reasons:
A)- a paper typo on someone's list
B)- a badly blurred stamping on the toe box (dash tags can & have been faked, also the plastic door tag build dates)
C)- a scam
D)- a repair- done somewhere, some time- from left-over parts and a bogus tag. I saw an 1100-number Pantera in Italy in '96 with a prototype single-pod dash, a flat deck lid and an early console, with square door handles all with a fresh paint job. RHD cars were also VERY rare in the early days. RHD in itself might be an interesting research project for someone. Japan, England and OZ were the only markets for RHD in '71.

Will be interesting to follow this thru the actual delivery- if it happens.

This blue car is interesting, as there are TWO Panteras identified as
1293.
One is THPNLC01293 (RHD with a GTS dash) and the blue one is
THPNLD01293.
Both are legitimate VINs.
The registry has details on this blue one, going back to 1977.
An even earlier car, 1113, is for sale in Europe.
Advertised in Spain, but last in Austria, 1113 has known ownership from
new.
Good Hunting!
