The stock fuel system is configured to combat that. There is a vent hose from the fuel tank that goes to a charcoal canister on the right side of the engine bay. There is another hose that goes to the air cleaner. When the engine is running it draws fines from the tank through the charcoal canister. When it’s not, fumes are vented from both the air cleaner and tank into the canister then allowed to escape. 

If you, like most people including me, consider yourself too cool for such things, you have your fuel tank vent leading to a hose going nowhere, and you have an open element air filter, and no charcoal canister.

Then you get fumes.....
