My car has the timing marks on the flywheel.

You can just mill them on a rotary table.  Much easier access for quick
timing checks, and they won't slip.

Checking and changing the belts is more often than setting the timing.

Not to mention avoiding the need to pull the seat, firewall cover and access
cover to set the timing . . .

Late cars have timing marks on the flywheel. Not sure if that can be added
to early cars, but that is much safer than the damper.
