[DeTomaso] Pantera heating

Fred, what often happens with unmodified expansion tanks is, the tanks were built for European rad caps which are a bit longer than any U.S. cap. So a brand new U.S rad cap will seal for a while, but the rubber seal in the cap rapidly ages & gets stiff. So it no longer seals as well. In addition, the contractor that built those tanks often did a rough, porous solder job on the bottom of the necks where they attach to the tank body, so they often don't seal  very well.

One fix we've found over decades is to take the small expansion tank to a radiator shop & have the neck unsoldered, and a new US made tank neck carefully resoldered on. Then a maximum 16psi U.S-made cap will fit, seal and last. Cheap, easy fix if you're using a stock tank. Note- most radiators stock and aftermarket, of any materials, will hold 16-17 psi but higher rated racing caps can balloon the rad core if they develop full pressure. Stock cap was rated at 0.9 Bar- about 13+psi. Good luck- J DeRyke

My car displays about 185 degrees on the gauge, but after I drive it for
a while, it seeps out of the radiator cap closest to the engine.
Background: I drove the car in 90 degrees weather but it was at a
reasonable highway speed for about 40 minutes. Virtually no city stop
and go. After things cooled down I drove for about 10 minutes and no
trouble this time.

I have the overflow tank next to it filled about 1/2 full. I measured
the tank so not to overfill. It was filled while the engine is hot. I've
read both versions of filling it. Think this is the right version. Other
than that, the car runs fine. ANY IDEAS? Please email me because I'm
really not good on computers. fred at creekspeak.com

Thanks in advance to all the Pantera gurus who have always helped me.
Fred Sweeney
