[DeTomaso] Source for basic torque values

Bill,
As a 10 year old I was helping my dad put a motor in a try-axel Ford dump truck. He asked be to get him a washer for a 3/8” bold. I picked one off the work bench and gave it to him. After installing the bolt and washer thought the chain for the hoist he started to pull on the chain to lift the motor a bit. A loud snap was heard. My dad looked at me with half of a washer in his hand. “Why in the world did you give me a harden washer?”
Yup down the carb and into the cylinder. It took years for him to forget what I did. First of only two motors I have blown up.

Larry, I think that I mentioned this a while ago, but I have a "hot engine" crate from Keith Craft Engines in ARK. After 3 years one day I heard a "not-good" noise in the engine. Space City Pantera dudes pulled my engine - I shipped it back to company. They finally called me and said apparently someone had dropped a nut/something into the carb and it made its way down and kerplunk. So they rebuilt it shipped it back and Space City friends re-installed it, and it's running fine. I don't remember dropping anything, but I had taken the air cleaner off, (and there were several washers on the nut to take up slack), so....! Or, Maybe I didn't torque it down!!!! BILL L

I'll say that I've been around this forum for over 20 years (egad! It's really been that long). And I agree with Dave. I was absolutely dumbfounded at how light just a few inch pounds are for an oil pan bolt. And amazed at how long it didn't leak.
I've been using torque wrenches for over 30 years, not religiously mind you, but pretty much on anything that could fly apart under horsepower, or leak. ;)
We've had some engineering experts compare published torque specs for the 351C and various Pantera bits against bolt/nut data based on sizes, grade and other specs, on this forum in the past, and as I recall, the results are usually that the published specs are pretty much spot on. Good enough for me.
