[DeTomaso] Need to borrow/rent a bearing extractor tool for the safety wiring

Mike is right; I removed my diff and safety wired it without removing the carrier bearings. However, the carrier bearings should be inspected; Dennis Quella told me that they usually show the most wear. My carrier bearings were worn and needed to be replaced.

The carrier bearings I’m talking about have a needle bearing and race assembly that is pressed onto the differential housing & cover for each side of the assembly. The bearing race is held within the side covers.

I haven’t done it in years but my recollection is that you just remove the cast iron side plates, withdraw the flanges (that the driveshafts bolt to) and then just lift the differential out? Why would he horse around with the bearings?

I have even helped safety wire a ZF without even taking the
differential out at all. Armed with the right tools, it's possible
to do it by just removing the bottom cover and doing it in place.
That was a fascinating exercise to watch and take part in.....
