When I bought 1086 a few years ago, the door jamb release cable was long gone and someone had welded a small steel rod to the part of the receiver where the cable would normally attach . It went straight down and had a 90 deg bend so that it exited a tiny slot cut into the AC grill directly below the license plate. It offered very east access to the release and was not noticeable unless you knew that it was there .I thought it was a pretty logical, simple modification. 


Also, this latch mechanism is used on a LOT of cars! Lamborghini, Ferrari, Alfa etc....
