[DeTomaso] Fwd: my car on the grand tour

Fortunately, they’re using Gaffer’s tape. It looks like duct tape, but the adhesive isn’t as sticky. You can easily peel it off paint and it won’t leave a mark.

When I was at Motor Trend, we had a shooter that didn’t believe in suction cups to hold the tripod or SpeedRail to the car - he only used Gaffer’s Tape. The guy would go through a half-roll of the stuff per setup, and the car looked like it was being held together by the tape alone!

While we all thought he was nuts, we learned why he wouldn’t use suction cups: While shooting the cover for the 2002 Car of the Year issue, we had suction cupped a camera/tripod with a wide lens to the side of a prototype Thunderbird. At about 35 MPH, the car hit a pothole, and I watched the $4,000 rig pop off the car, smack the asphalt, bounce several times while spreading camera and lens parts all over the road. From that time on, I used suction cups, but I also had several strips of Gaffer’s tape in place as a backup.
