Most of the time, the core rubbing against the poly liner causes slow wear, eventually going thru the liner. Then the spring-steel core begins rubbing the steel jacket, eventually twisting the spring-core in two. But from what you describe, you may have not a cable problem but a right-angle-drive adapter problem, since the cable apparently broke in the rear? square-drive cable section. If the cable broke at the speedometer end, the gauge may have seized although I never heard of that happening. Pull the speedometer and fish out the broken end- it will need to be removed anyway from whatever end its in for a new assembly to work.

The adapter unscrews via the big left/right threaded nut attached to it, NOT the small 10mm bolt just below it. That little bolt, carelessly removed, allows an extension shaft to fall inside your ZF, forcing a total transaxle tear-down to retrieve it.

-------------- next part --------------
So, just realized there is nothing wrong with my cable!

Once my speedo stopped working I was stupid enough to take the cable
of the gauge before even looking at the ZF end of the cable.....

All what really happened was that cable got undone and disconnected
at ZF and then internal wire sled 2 cm back.

This is why, when I looked at the gauge end of cable it looked as if
the end broke off; it was actually just inside the jacket.

I just reconnected both ends and it is all in good order again.

Just had my speedo cable break, about in the middle of the square end
   that
enters into the gauge; I suppose the other part of the square wire is
   still
   in the gauge.
I was wondering about possibilities of repairing this without the need
   of
taking replacing the whole cable and routing a new one.
   1) seen a comment that this little part could possibly be welded back
   onto
the cable; seems it would be a tedious task?
   2) Did someone use any of the generic core replacement, such as this
   [4]https://www.summitracing.com/int/parts/atp-yc101/applications
In theory it would be easiest to do by just sliding old core out and
   new in,
cutting to length and crimping new end, but not sure if actual
   dimensions
would work with our gauge or ZF drive....
Thanks for suggestions; hope there is a simple way to fix this!
