The spider was never firmly attached, only crimped around the edges, with a kind of 'body-putty' between most of the rest, to hold it against the skin. I think the spider is mostly for vibration suppression or drumming, but your problem is so unusual. Maybe scrape the old stuff out and re-glue the spider to the inside of the skin with something better?

   Thanks Julian,
The hinges seem ok, with flexing appearing to be left and right of the
hinges towards the outside of the car.
Very difficult to understand where exactly or where how what to weld.
Perhaps the IPSCO solution is my only option.

Similarly you may need to strengthen around the hinges, but identifying
exactly where yours is flexing is first task.
To alleviate some of the pressure on that area you could try (and I
thoroughly recommend) the IPSCO decklid shock and mounting relocation
kit. As I have said previously the stock decklid shocks are mounted too
close to the pivot point, with all the force directly upward and just
alleviating some of that may be enough, but it would seem if your
decklid is flexing that much you have another underlying problem. The
good thing is yours returns back to normal, whereas most of the
stressed decklids I have seen do not and they are extremely
   difficult to correct.

   Dear list members,
My June '72 suffers "splaying" of the sides of the deck lid leaving
large gaps between the lid and the body, while the hinge/top of the
   deck lid appears largely static.
This occurs even with gas struts (non original) that are not strong
enough to hold the lid in the open position.
With lift struts removed the lid settles to nice shut lines.
Is it possible to strengthen the deck to stop this?
   Thanks in advance,
   Dave
