What about something like this?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/22mm-Inline-Y-Strainer-Central-Heating-System-Mesh-Filter-CxC-/261395250158

They are available in various sizes, and are sturdy.

If you want to be really fancy, you can use one of these filter balls:

http://www.marflowhydronics.co.uk/products/filterball/overview/

They can be cleaned without loosing more than a few drops of coolant, and they also act as a shut off valve, which can be useful for the heater.

I have a few filterballs in the heating system of my houses, and they do a good job of removing crap, and are easily serviceable.

On the Pantera I have a Tefba filter, which caught some crap initially, but not much now.

It's really surprising how much junk circulates through your cooling
system. In the beginning I cleaned it yearly, by necessity. After
several years I just check it every now and then and there isn't much.
But I think it can only help...
