[DeTomaso] Engine install suggestions - tools

Lynn, Sean's suggestion of a 2nd person is good if this is a new exercise for you. For instance, it IS possible for the distributor cap to contact (and break) the big rear window glass while 'doing it yourself'. In fact, this was the impetus for at least one vendor to fabricate and stock a plexiglas replacement window. The tools necessary also vary but an engine crane is mandatory. If you are only try-fitting the engine, the balance point is approximately the carb mount on the intake. If you include the ZF, the balance shifts to between the rear of the cylinder heads and the bellhousing, and the ZF is used as a 'lever' to control the attitude of the assembly while lowering. Obviously, this requires three hands as the whole package weighs around 700 lbs..... Good luck- J DeRyke

I have always used the bolt holes in the rear of the heads.

This year I did the install myself. No problems if you don't rush it.
