[DeTomaso] A-arm bushings...should they require machining?

Nope... I have 7... I originally bought 16 but when doing the rear a-arms I managed to mess one up. Never got around to doing the fronts yet. So I really need one more. Supposedly they will go in when I do "the big brakes"...
BTW, they do seem to have aged OK, but then they have been in cold dark storage in clean Washington state air.
Sorry.
Jeff

Do you have 16 of those NOS? although the age would worry me
I just bought 24 since my first concern with the new bushings was the over all length varied.
If you have followed my progress (or lack off), it will be a WHILE before I get the a-arms painted and ready to press back in.

Joe:
I have some NOS bushings (Circa 1985) laying around. With my cheap digital caliper they measure 1.180. (They are also pretty cold this morning) I have a Delrin bushings from the same era and they measure 1.179.
.008 inches sounds like an awful lot to press in if they were steel/rubber OEM style, but if they are polyurethane that probably isn't too bad.
Others may have better advice.

Dear Chuck,
I had the same experience. Rubber hard to get out, urethane easy to install.
Any driving scheduled for the weekend? I have to go to Duncan on Sat for a
funeral.

Dear Joe,
I don't know.
I do know that twenty odd years ago when I converted
both Panteras to polyurethane bushings from Pantera Performance Center, they
went in with just finger/hand pressure. No press needed. Obviously, they
must have been smaller than yours and I don't understand why there is such a
great difference.
Puzzled, Chuck Engles

I have removed the bushings from the front A-Arms and have found their ODs
to be a consistent 1.184". the A-arm bore IDs varied slightly around
1.181". this makes sense as the IDs would be 30mm with the bushings
oversized for MY expected press fit of ~ 0.003".
NOW, the new bushing ODs vary around 1.189". to ME, that is way too much
press and could plastic yield the A-arm bores.
Is it expected to machine the new bushing ODs? (Pretty common practice for
new parts to be oversized for field fitting in the machines I use to work
to allow for possible damage/wear.)
OR
Throw away the micrometers and get a bigger press?
