[DeTomaso] yes, the square thing does that

I reassembled the switch without the cube-with-a-ridge-on-it and now I don't have to go back to the zero position to reengage the starter motor.
The contacts were coated with what looked like dried up grease. They cleaned up easily and I put a THIN layer of dielectric grease on things.

I love how the Factory wiring diagram does not give the colors of the wires actually coming from the switch to the connection box.

this is a follow up on the "run position of ignition switch is dead" post. The switch is apart and i have conductivity thru the connector dealie and down-current side of the switch.

It looks like the ball bearing and larger spring determine the detents, while the small cube with a ridge on it are what make you have to turn the key back to the acc position before you can engage the starter again. My car frequently takes 2 tries to get it to run from cold, and I find having to rotate the switch so much annoying. If I leave the cube and spring out, will the switch work but I not have to do that?

Thanks,

Jim

The gauges would still work if the ballast is broken, so the ignition switch is still the likely issue here.
