[DeTomaso] ZF gears don't engage properly

It wasn't that long ago that I redid my clutch.  When done, well, wouldn't
disengage.  Forget who I talked to - possibly Dennis at Pantera Performance.
Told me to drive it, get the surface of the clutch plate broken in, as in
smooth it out, and probably be ok.  And, it was!

With the clutch being "NEW", do you know if the required throw out bearings
travel to fully compress its marcel springs and separate the disk/plate is
less than the travel of Your clutch slave arrangement.

The original clutch had very little marcel spring compression and thus the
available clutch slave travel is minimun

It sounds like there is enough residual drag on the clutch to prevent gear
engagement, but not enough to overcome internal resistance in the gearbox to
turn an output shaft/wheel. Can you get a 40 thou feeler gauge between the
pressure and friction plates when the clutch is disengaged? Are you sure you
have all the air bled from the clutch line?


The pilot bearing could also be dragging, I have encountered this in the
past with a bronze oilite bushing or if the input shaft could be slightly
damaged (easily done in shipping if not secured appropriately in a crate)

I immediately start by apologizinge for my poor technical wording , Folks !
Here is the problem:
My mechanic has fitted a second hand ZF DS2 gearbox in a Pantera.
Everything works fine when the engine does not run, all gears engage and
disengage freely.
The clutch is new and works fine, engage and disengage. the pedal is normal,
and you can see it moving through the window in the bellhousing.
The gearlever is well centered in the tunnel in the cockpit Strangely, when
the engine runs, it is impossible to engage any gear properly.
If you start the engine with a gear already engaged, and the clutch pushed,
it works fine, the wheel is not rotating.
If you release the clutch, the wheel turns normally, and the gear can be
disengaged normally, but a new gear can not be entered, as the teeth are
hitting each other in the gearbox Someone told me that maybe , the oil in
the gearbox was not correct, or that the level was not sufficient .
Does that make sense ?
