Charles ,This is John Garcia , if you are still in Spain , the whole india thing is a real eye opener, In my travels with work and church  I have been over there in lots of locations including Madras (Chennai now) .observations.  Chennai is a massive mass of impoverished  humanity with the primary city area said to have over 9 million people now (2011 census 7.8++million). it covers 200 sq miles to 500 sq miles (estimate) of total area considered to be the major Chennai "city area"
1. The whole country has a massive filth problem , human , animal waste of both the solid and liquid kind is everywhere even in the best areas of the cities. 2. The religious variations are very obvious and lead to an increase in the filth issue never being able to be really resolved. Rats, cats , dogs, cattle, monkeys , etc are allowed to roam and crap freely, with any clean up causing major political unrest . Being in the Bengal region there is an open Tamil Vs Hindu fighting and politics that  I have seen during a visit, become mob scenes in the north fort st George area which houses all the political and judicial zones. 3. Madras (Chennai) is at the confluence of 3 rivers and they are extremely polluted  , industrial waste since the auto industry and support is in Chennai; as well as even human remains as part of burial ceremonies and worse than anything I have ever seen even in Mexico, Brazil, Thailand or China , below from wiki.345 kilometres (214 mi) east of Bangalore by road. Two major rivers flow through Chennai, the Cooum River (or Koovam) through the centre and the Adyar River to the south. A third river, the Kortalaiyar, travels through the northern fringes of the city before draining into the Bay of Bengal, at Ennore. The estuary of this river is heavily polluted with effluents released by the industries in the region.[71] Adyar and Cooum rivers are heavily polluted with effluents and waste from domestic(human and animal waste) and commercial sources, the Coumm being so heavily polluted it is regarded as the city's eyesore
4. Chennai has a huge problem with excess houses that as high as 50% have been abandoned because they are too expensive for the average local and are either in section without reliable water, waste removal and or reliable electricity. below from wiki this is the 200 sq mile region onlyPer 2011 census, there are 1.1 million households in the city and the residential housing stock available is 1,150,000 – a surplus of about 50,000 houses. About 43,700 of them are kept vacant. In the suburbs of Chennai located in Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts, the figures of vacant houses 56,000 and 71,000, respectively. Of the existing housing stock in the city, about 200,000 houses are not in good condition, necessitating either to rebuild or build new units. About 26,000 households live in houses without any room and another 427,000 families (with an average size of five members) live in small dwelling units with only one room. An earlier estimate shows that there is a need to generate about 420,000 units for low-income groups by 2016.[199]As of 2012[update], an estimated population of 11,116 (0.16 percent) were homeless. Per Supreme Court guidelines, the city needs 65 shelters for the homeless. However, it has only 15, of which 8 are functioning and two are under renovation.[200]As of 2017, there are more than 2.2 million households, with 40 percent of the residents without owning a house.[201]
5. The northern part of Chennai was both Portuguese, and British empire major trading ports , as a result there are areas that look just like England and Spain/Portugal in buildings and avenues etc: lots of  museums , parks and great beach areas . Chennai has a massive world class medical system and most medical tourism  in india is in Chennai. Chennai is on a major fiber route , so if you have money and can live in a decent area ( still petty crime is rampant ) you can shield yourself from the normal India experience .
The whole area is tropical to sub tropical with an average of over 5 feet or rain fall a year and being on the coast is subject to both earth quakes , tidal forces,  monsoons to replenish drinking water and an average of 70% relative humidity most of the year. temperatures range from the mid 50f in the winter to the 90's and 10X's in the summer.
Food is cheap and can be found for most tastes in the northern Chennai  area, Other areas are  more traditional depending on the people  living in the particular area of the establishment ( just like Chicago or New York) gasoline for the car is available but  only total and shell/bp  can be relied on for what the pump says you are pumping,  india oil stations sometimes have the same gas in each grade marking and the smaller ones I have seen iron/water intrusion issues.
TATA sucks as an employer with regards to the local workforce , they are treated like they are owned by their supervisor and I have seen routinely persons being abused verbally by their bosses on TATA's lines . For non nationals in Tata the higher you are in the company structure the more respect is given and expected.hope this helps jg

Have just been offered a big-time promotion that would require
relocating to Chennai, India. I know absolutely nothing about the city
or country, but I have until March to take the decision.

Anyone spent a lot of time in the country, or had business dealings in
India that could give me some background?
