[DeTomaso] weird tiny coolant tube

I understand the oxidation concern.

A scheme to mitigate would be the "expansion" tank full cold and allow it to
exchange with a reservoir tank.

As I have gotten to know our Superformance Daytona Coupe I have found lots
of "interesting" things. One was the pair of hoses that are meant to vent
air out of the coolant system - one came from the top of the radiator, the
other from the thermostat housing. Both hoses had aluminum plugs with 1/8
inch holes drilled through them, and both went to the coolant reservoir -
via pipes on the inside of the reservoir that discharged into the upper part
of the tank. Oh, the hoses were routed near the headers - so were wrapped
up in lots of shiny heat shield. And looked like poop.

When getting the headers redone to add an O2 bung for the new FI system, get
rid of some really crap sleeve connectors on the down pipes and get the
headers coated on both the inside and the outside, I combined the two vents
into one hose, got rid of the drilled aluminum plugs and put a valve in the
hose, then re-routed to the coolant reservoir, taking care not to get close
to headers. First thing one needs to realize is you don't really want hot
coolant continuously circulating to the reservoir - this will hasten the
degradation of the coolant due to the increased oxidation of the coolant
because it is hot when in contact with air in the reservoir.

When the car was back together I started the car up with valve in the vent
line open, let it warm up, revved the engine lightly, then closed the valve,
shut her down, let her cool, and made sure she didn't run out of coolant in
the reservoir. Then, when cool, start up, let warm up, open valve, rev a
bit, close valve, and consider the system vented.

BTW - coating the inside of the headers was the best thing I have had done
in a heck of a long time - I am amazed at how much cooler it is under the
bonnet.

Dear John,

In all likelihood, that is the vent tube that was designed,
but not well engineered to vent air out of the system *automatically*.
Unfortunately, it does not work as expected. I have it disconnected at both
ends on both Panteras. There are approximately 50-60K trouble free miles
between the two of them. You'll need to cap it off or disconnect it at both
ends, then the leak is solved.

                            Warmest regards, Chuck Engles
