For what it's worth Chuck, the Pantera Research Institute - Northwest Division decided against using that small 90* piece when replacing all the pipes with Stainless. Bob Benson made a donation of a gift certificate for a full set of pipes many years back to the Racing Against Autism Pantera. The pipe set included the small 90* piece.
I worked for some time trying to get it positioned to my satisfaction but couldn't. In the end, I used the Napa hose, cut it in two, leaving me a spare that I always carried in the car.
Silicone should be okay if you treat it well.

Dear Mike,
Today's chapter
I called my local NAPA big store and warehouse
with
the NAPA part number NBH 7571. They consistently disappoint me.
They
didn't have one in the warehouse. I gave up.
I called Dennis Quella. Dennis said that it
has
become increasingly more difficult for them to obtain the short ninety
degree hose. If I understand him correctly, they did cut up other
hoses
(NBH 7571?) to have the desired hose, but that has also become
problematic.
They now sell silicon hose with the proper
special
clamps to prevent damage to the hose. Of course, it does cost more
than
base, old rubber, but it is more readily available.
I did inquire about the option of two short
straight
segments with a ninety degree metal connection. Dennis did not feel
that
was an optimal solution.
So, I have sold out to silicon! Thanks to all
for
the help.
Warmest regards, Chuck
Engles

Chuck,
It's not a mix-up. If its done its done intentionally. Like the pipe
around
the shift lever, it's seen as a superior solution.
