[DeTomaso] Hard Start Issue - The Final Solution

Dear Doug,

AH-HA!!! That explains the schmutz that gummed up my MSD
distributor that was *not* rust, but rather some sort of peculiar corrosion.
After looking at the darn stuff and wondering where it came from, the ozone
effect seems to be cause. Thanks for explaining the bad ju-ju inside the
MSD distributor cap and the lack of such evil spirits inside the Ford.

                                   Warmest regards, Chuck Engles

Mike,

Stock Ford dizzy advance mechanisms are VERY different from MSD's.
The Ford dizzy's advance rides beneath its breaker/reluctor plate and has a
felt pad that holds oil for lubricating the mechanism's bore where it rides
on the main shaft.
MSD dizzys don't have such a lubricating pad and their advance mechanism
rides above its reluctor plate.

The main reason the MSD advance gets bound up over time is precisely because
it lies above its reluctor plate where the ozone created by the spark gaps
within the cap drastically accelerate corrosion of the parts. The Ford
advance system is far more reliable but the MSD is more easily accessed for
tuning the advance curve.

What felt pad? Didn't see one of those in the MSD 8350

Pull off the rotor periodically and apply a drop of oil to the little felt
pad beneath.

Keeps things moving down there.

Awesome write-up. I recall finding a similar problem on my Mach 1 about
30 years ago. Now whenever I replace the cap and rotor, I check the
mechanical advance. :)
